ISPE Young Professionals Happy Hour

Come out to the Young Professional and Student Happy Hour Event at Green Flash Brewery and have some fun. Your $10 fee includes pizza and 4 4-oz. drinks. This was a great opportunity to have some fun and network with professionals. Note that you do not have to be over 21 years of age to attend.
Bioengineering Day
Date: Saturday, April 12

Location: Sanford Consortium
This event was a unique forum for networking between our industrial partners and the bioengineering community at UC San Diego. This year's Bioengineering Day featured a keynote by Prof. Terrence J. Sejnowski, head of the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory (Salk Institute), as well as graduate research talks, a poster expo, an industry panel discussion, and a networking reception.

The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering attracts thousands of people each year to explore exhibits and demonstrations on all facets of science and engineering. BEGS (Bioengineering Graduate Society) and BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society) once again hosted Festival exhibits to promote bioengineering to young people and the community and we need your help in making the event a success. Students had the additional opportunity to interact with participating companies. Companies and groups in the past have included Qualcomm, Kaiser, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, and the Reuben H Fleet Science Center.

ISPE/HMP3 Career Path Information Session

Time: 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Location: Leichtag Auditorium
Come join ISPE and HMP3 as we discuss possible career paths available to students with an interest in the biomedical field. Dr. Jalveh Lameh, Executive Director of BioPharma Services at Genoptix, a Novartis Company, shared her experiences and how she got involved in the industry. We discussed the various pros and cons of attending graduate school, medical school, or working in industry after graduation. This was an excellent opportunity to network and learn more about all the opportunities!
Genentech Internship Information Session
Date: Wednesday, January 22
Time: 5:30-7:00pm
Place: UCSD, SME Cymer Room
Genentech was back with internship opportunities for anyone interested in biotechnology, pharmacy, and medical devices. All life science and engineering majors were welcome to come and hear more details from representatives. This was a great opportunity and was Genentech's largest recruitment at UCSD this year.

Location: PFBH, Zweifach Library (4th Floor)
Do you have an interest in working in a research lab? ISPE can help you get that coveted position! Come learn tips and advice from current lab researchers on how to approach a PI, the difference between wet lab and dry lab, important programs, and much more. Attendees were able to ask current students how they obtained their lab positions.

Walt Baxter, Senior Principle Scientist at Medtronic, was our guest speaker. Dr. Baxter received both his M.S. and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from UCSD. He currently works on cardiac rhythm disease management. He is interested in the fusion of medical device and imaging mechanical analysis, and is currently a leading engineer in the medical device industry. Walt Baxter serves on UCSD's Industrial Advisory Board and was able to give advice on how to transition from university into the workplace, as well as his thoughts on further education. It was also a great networking opportunity for those looking for internships and full-time jobs.
